Bill Smith made a mistake last year in not dealing away veterans; Terry Ryan can't repeat his predecessor's error.

Mr. Souhan is right on the money. This organization should be focusing on the 2014 and 2015 seasons as the summer progresses. I think Terry Ryan is too smart to stand pat.

no trade clause or not, you have to be nuts not to talk to mauer about moving him. Yes, the twins will need to eat half of that salary for sure. That is still 12 million dollars fteed up for two very good players. Mauer is the third best catcher on the team, and he simply isn't worth half of what he is being paid. move him.

I disagree on Span. Too young, too valuable to the team going forward. Tough to find decent lead off guys like he's proven to be. He's not reached the point in his career where he's more valuable as trade material then he is as a building block

Let's hope that Ryan is "too smart to stand pat" The Twins have delusions of granduer when it comes to certain players. They maintain that Liriano is too valuable to trade-phooey! Same with Capps, Blackburn, Span. Everyone is replaceable and that includes Mauer

If Bill Smith had traded Cuddy, Kubel and Nathan at the deadline last year all hell would have broken loose. What we needed him to be was the kind of guy who would have made the moves in spite of the short term fallout. Terry Ryan won't make the same mistake.

Maybe they should relegate Mauer to batboy and hope that he gets so bored and humiliated that he begs to be traded.

Joe is gonna tired of losing...and will waive that no trade clause. Even if he's a DH on a contender. It's a contender.

JIM good article i agree 100% with what you wrote.I would keep and trade the same players as you would have.SPAN is the first one i would trade he is good not great and you could get a pitcher for him.

Well this one should rile everybody up. Trade Span because we have outfield depth ? Really, show me the depth. Perkins has got the stuff, but we still don't know if he has the head to be a closer, I think he's found his spot. Remember Ron Davis ? He was a lousy closer after being a great 8th inning setup guy. Sportswriting by hindsight looks easy to me. I like what Ryan's doing, let him be, they're a little grittier and tougher now than before.
