Dennis, All this complaining about habitat loss and you never seem to mention what the root of the problem is - corn ethanol. Nearly half of the corn in this country goes into ethanol. Till the special deals for ethnol end, there is going to be tremendus pressure to put as much land as possible under the plow.

duckboat38, not only that, corn is not the best agricultural product to use to produce ethanol. Sugarcane is best because of its high energy output per ton. So we have wasted our time attempting to use corn. It is time to end the corn subsidy.

We should all be grateful for an "outdoors writer" who continues to remind us of these grave threats to our natural and cultural heritage. Dennis, keep it up. I imagine sometimes it must feel like you are the voice in the wilderness. But, you are saying what must be said.

Tilling those prairies will also release huge amounts of CO2 making climate change that much more difficult to deal with.

It is the failure of voters who don't hold Congress accountable for redirecting money to other projects, the Social Security fund raid being nothing but criminal. The whole reason for the MN lottery was proceeds were going for the environment, correct? Now most of the money goes to the General Fund. Sleight of hand, with too many players and no one is held accountable. Where does it end?

Even if we get a rational energy policy that eliminates corn ethanol subsidies population increase will guarantee that we WILL plow those remaining grasslands. We are going to add another billion hungry mouths in the next 12 years just like we added a billion in the last 12 years. That's nuts!
