Ending a futile quest for a racino helps the track, its workers and the industry.

15 years of fighting the DFL-Mystic Lake marriage/union was enough for Canterbury. They had to take this deal. Once the last major chance to pass (to fund Vikings Stadium) was done, this was last resort.

I don't think that a tribal monopoly and total control of our politicians regarding gambling is a good deal for anyone other than the controlling tribes...

Indians win again! However, this will give Canterbury a chance to compete again (higher purses), which as a horse player I look forward to. Bring back the St. Paul Derby!!

I think that it a great deal for the horse racing in Minnesota. It was great to see the casino and Canterbury work together to find a solution that helps both operations.(Minnesota Legislature please see this as an example of working together to better 2 competing business's).I agree that Mr. Day should direct his anger at the Legislature. I think that Racino is a no-brainer myself. Without the Legislature's support on this there is no telling when or if it will ever pass.

Nicely put Rachel!...Has a avid horse-racing fan of 25 years this is great news for Cby...0 for 15 years is a stat I would play against every day...speaking of Day...very dissapointed at his stance or maybe he's upset that he needs to find a new job. BTW agree with Sakbry above about the St. Paul Derby or should I say "I'll Have Another...St. Paul Derby!"

A good deal for the State?? You've got to be kidding me! Rachel Blount is one of the most worthless columnists in any "major" market, but now it's clear how she keeps her job. Just continuing to be a shill for the Strib. The woman has no class and no scruples.

If Racino supporters (and I consider myself among them) could not get a Racino approved with the Vikings stadium as part of the package it certainly wasn't going to happen any time soon if ever now that that is no longer an option. Canterbury made a smart business decision.

cheeznrice-what a cheap shot towards Rachel Blount, dude. She wrote a column, which is an opinion piece. Opinions cannot be wrong, but they can be diagreed with. Just because you don't like the Indian-Canterbury deal is no reason to cheap shot the writer. And, Ms. Blount is correct that Canterbury had to take this deal or what the track and the racing industry in Minnesota go down the toilet. When they run only 8-9 races per card, with 6 to 7 horses per race, with very few winners paying over $10 and most exactas paying $10-$20; no serious betters are going to bet on these races. I go once a week, but never handicap for Canterbury during the live season as you cannot make any money as the competition level is so poor here. This additional money will really, really help the purse structure, which should lead to better racing. Ms. Blount wrote a great column that is -dead-on- correct; Canterbury had to do this deal, or it was all over for the track in relatively short order. And, by the way, Mr. Dick Day is a typical politician, trying to have it both ways.

cheeznrice is a total idiot! Rachel has more common sense in her pinky then he'll ever have in his entire body! She is 'spot on' as usual - this deal was a no-brainer! I agree on the St. Paul Derby - I'm even thinking a big race (with a $1M purse???) co-sponsored by Mystic would really put Canterbury on the map!!!
