The end of federal subsidies at the end of 2011 left ethanol plants struggling to make money in a glutted market early this year.

Ethanol has always been a sham, let the market deal its fate and move on with honest science.

I hope they go broke. We did not ask for this additive that gets us less mileage, ergo raising the price over the high price of gas already and causing engine problems and lawn equipment. This is supposed to be a democracy not a dictatorship, so why don't we have a choice like the Europeans who can buy pure gasoline or mixed with ethanol.

Ethanol subsidies and mandates have been a pipe dream to prop up corn farmers and ethanol producers who should have been allowed to succeed or fail based on market interest, not government intervention. The societal cost of putting more cash into the pockets of those in the ethanol industry has been reduced vehicle fuel efficiency, leading to higher net fuel costs, increased engine wear (particularly in small engines, like mowers, etc.), and more harm and cost to the environment (greenhouse gases, climate change, health effects) than using regular gas. Quite a price to pay to benefit a select few.

What is the number now on green companies that have gone belly up even with the large government subsidies ,and tax breaks? 17 enough is enough it's not working

The mandate needs to go. Aren't we supposed to have a free country here? Is it really reasonable to require that everyone buy a certain product supplied by 1% when this product vastly increases the amount of row cropping and tiling wreaking havoc on our lakes, rivers, and the gulf of Mexico?

Good attempt at finding an alternative, it didn't work and now it should die. Bio-diesel has worked in the private sector years, why are the only family / economic cars that run on made by Volkswagon and Mercedes Benz?

I totally agree. This mandate that we have on ethanol is pure craziness. Ethanol makes up such a small amount of sales in relation to pure gasoline it is smart to take it out and let the people decide what they want for product in their cars, boats, etc. Why should a person be REQUIRED to purchase a product in the first place? This is not even close to a green product anyway---does everyone realize how much water it takes to produce a gallon of ethanol? This is a waster, not a saver.

Someday we are going to look back and wonder how we could have been so stupid to put corn into our gas tanks, especially when it does nothing to benefit overall emissions. Of course the producer's margins are down, the only reason they ever made profits in the first place was because of subsidies. What a joke.

Let's all keep in mind that a requirement to run E15 (15% ethanol) is still being pressed forward. This is a de facto subsidy for the ethanol industry, and will just perpetuate this sham. @gophernot - anyone who thinks ethanol is 'green' is just delusional...

allimine... Tell us how much water it takes to make ethanol, also tell us how much water it takes to process crude into gas. Now what do you propose to use instead of ethanol to increase to octane of gasoline? MTBE? or go back to lead? Both products are extremely hazardous to us and the environment.
