Speedy OF Buxton too good for Twins to pass up

The Twins scouted Byron Buxton several times before concluding they badly wanted the Georgia high schooler.

He may turn out to be a very fine player, but the Twins need pitching. The Twins are always "building" for a future that never actually arrives.

I'm glad they appeared to select the best available player. That should always be what teams should do no matter what.

Always, always, always take the best player available. Buxton was the biggest risk/reward player in the draft, but this team isn't going to get back playing it safe. Yes, it's unfortunate that his ETA is probably 2017, but for 6-8 years of a premium CF talent, it should be worth it.

a Torii Hunter in the making?? good CF play, some pop in the bat.. sounds like he has a good arm too. Now, the Twins need to get some pitching.

Drafting a high school player that high is always an extra risk but I can imagine every scout the Twins have saw this kid and liked his potential. Everyone needs pitching but don't forget, the Twins drafted a ton of pitchers last year. I like the pick and I like the versatility - if he can't hit at that level to possibly pitch.

Will he be as good as Torii Hunter? Better? After Torii was drafted #20 on the first round in 1993, it took him 6 years to make the Bigs. He struggled his first 2 years with the Twins before breaking in to .261/27/92 in 2001. Hunter looks to be a good measuring rod for what Buxton does ... but it's just "cross your fingers" from here. Gut instinct: He's gonna make it.

He will be our #2 prospect in the minors (if we can sign him), right next to Sano at #1. I would've liked to have seen them take a stud pitcher with that first pick, but I guess this will do. I just hope he pans out. I hate to see a high draft pick like this not come through and contribute to this struggling club even though it's going to be in the 4-5 year range.

Pitching is so hit or miss with injuries nowadays, taking a pitcher with a high pick just doesn't make sense. Taking a top flight talent position player in the first round and then loading up on pitching later in the draft seems to be the best strategy.

Sounds like a great kid, welcome Byron. See you in a few years on the big stage
