Vikings secondary, in search of its identity, loses Allen

Asher Allen's retirement did catch the Vikings off guard. However, it's one of many issues the rebuilding unit is trying to sort out.

It's cause for concern that the Vikings were caught off guard by this decision. Minnesota has what will almost certainly be the worst defensive secondary in the NFL in 2012. From his first play in a real game, Asher Allen has been a big part of that terrible unit. By all accounts he's a good kid with insufficient NFL talent. In my estimation, he actually did the Vikings a pretty appreciable solid here. As of this moment, the Vikings don't have a single veteran corner or safety on the roster who is NFL caliber. It's sad when an unproven draft pick is virtually guaranteed to be a starter by Week 1. Spielman needs to completely overhaul the secondary and Allen's exit is a good first step. It's bothersome to me that the Vikings didn't have the foresight to make this decision themselves.

[the Vikings don't have a single veteran corner or safety on the roster who is NFL caliber] Huh?? And what is Winfield? The waterboy?

Well, gee--this is a team that gets a full offseason to assess and build a secondary with the parts they have drafted, and the acquisitions they picked up from other teams, along with some free agency signings, and of course with the current roster parts. It's unfortunate that Allen decided to call it quits, for whatever reason, but the reality of it is that he may not have even made the roster, but that is only speculation. I think the future can only go up from last year. More stability at safety, and if they can stay healthy they'll improve. Are you looking for shutdown corners? Sorry--too many parts to replace overall, and it's gonna take more from other areas on the defensive side of the ball to step up and make this situation less glaring...

Lots of good info in this story. Asher Allen retiring means not wasting any time on someone not fully committed. Guys paid to throw their bodies in harms way need to be committed to it. Plus, maybe they'll find that really hungry kid out there somewhere. Anyone hinting that Fraiser should have known is just wrong. It's not exactly the same but when I hung up my cleats in college it came as a surprise to my coach too. But priorities change for a kid. I especially like D.C. William's comments that he doesn't have to convince anyone of anything. Their job is to prove it on the field with wins, nothing less.

He probably saw the handwriting on the ball. He wasn't any good and didn't want to embarrass himself any more and did the honorable thing and quit like the rest of the secondary does.

Pro bowl comment : The game isn't what it used to be because now days the players are all million dollar babies and don't want to risk getting hurt or hurt someone else and thus possibly losing millions of dollars by getting hurt playing a meaningless game. They should still have the game tho and make it a a two hand touch game which it is now, but make it official. All the players should donate all money and income that is generated from the kiddy game and donate it to charity and give it back to us hard working people the fans because they would be nothing without us fans. The players without us fans would be nothing without us. They would have to go out and work a hard working job and work for pennies if it weren't for us.

This is the worst team in the NFL with the worst head coach.

When will these guys learn to take page from the Twins players handbook? The one that says "nurse an injury for an entire season and still get paid".

Pfft - Just when we were putting the final touches on the "Asher Allen Memorial Wing" of the burn unit at HCMC...

Frankly, I'm kind of excited about this secondary. The new blood brings an element of anticipation as we don't know if one of these guys could be a Revis...of course they could be a bunch of A. Allens too. Getting cook back and the mentoring of Winfield certainly won't hurt.
