These days, replacing rotors is standard maintenance

Your reply to the lady buying a used, low-mileage vehicle included: "The vehicle may need routine tire and brake replacement." Tire replacement is a given and a no-brainer. What is your meaning as to routine brake replacement and especially the rotors?

"I think it's time for you to accept the fact that replacing brake rotors once or twice during the life of a modern motor vehicle is relatively normal and routine." Did PB read the whole question? The GMC in question has less than 38,000 miles. Just how often is the owner expected to "accept the fact" that the brake rotors need to be replaced? At least he didn't recommend Marvel Mystery Oil or some other "mechanic in a can" product.

Maybe it is how the vehicle is driven, some people use their brakes a lot more than other people. My 2003 Silverado 1500 did not need front brakes until 95,000 rears at 55,000. And my pickup is used to pull and carry stuff.

I respectfully disagree. I turned the rotors and drums on a 04' Corolla with around 50k on them and lots of city driving. The shop said there was plenty of material on both the rotors and drums to turn them. The wear limits were stamped right on the inside of both. I think it was ~$60-$80 for all 4. New rotors and drums run anywhere from $35-$150 a piece depending on what you buy. The alternative, buying cheap chinese rotors (that's where most cheap OEM's come from) and drums sends more money overseas, fills the landfills with more trash, and puts my local machinist out of business. So if you support all of that put new cheap chinese mystery metal rotors on every 40k and put up with the warping you'll have for 30k of that 40k.

Oh, forgot, with the money you saved turning your dums and rotors, get the exact original pads and shoes from the dealer for your vehicle, you'll be happy you did. Most of the rebuilt pads and shoes offered by the parts places are of very poor qualty, and will not last half as long as the original equipment pads. Thus forcing you to buy more expensive drums, rotors, pads, shoes and labor sooner than need be.
