Maplewood wouldn't have such a problem funding its parks if it hadn't agreed to the shady deal offered it by former Ramsey County Commissioner Hal Norgard. He offered to give the city ownership of all of the county parks within its boundaries if it agreed to permit the construction of the ugly golf dome up at Aldrich Arena. The city went for the deal. So now they can't afford to fully fund the properties they took off the county's hands. Too bad for the city taxpayers - especially since the city leadership has made it clear that they're willing to change the law to allow parkland to be sold for development if a developer proposes it. A suggestion, Maplewood City Council: give the former county parks back to the county. As a Maplewood citizen, I'd like to see them kept safe from developers, thank you very much.
