Both sides of border hope changes make Canada entry easier

The Canadian government has loosened restrictions on U.S. citizens with law infractions. That could be good news for the tourist industry.

"Beginning March 1, people with one misdemeanor conviction MIGHT get a one-time free temporary resident permit to enter Canada." and "up to the discretion of the border agent". So far nothing has changed. A person with one conviction here in the US still CAN NOT PLAN on going through- it's still up to the person you talk to face to face which is the problem. If something is changed, they should put it in writing so people can count on what is in writing now what a person at the border 'feels' like that day. One agent things a wedding is 'ok' to grant you to enter but not a fishing trip, the next agent thinks a hunting trip is a good reason but not a fishing trip or a funeral, the next person/crossing location you talk to things a funeral is a good enough reason but not a fishing trip, blah blah blah. If they want our money bad enough they'll make it a concrete sequential process and not leave it up to the discretion of one agent on duty who may or may not be having a bad day.

I understand that when fishing Ontario you still cannot have any beer (or any other alcoholic beverage) in the boat, even if you don't have any prior convictions. It makes perfect sense to stop people from driving boat who are legally drunk, using the same blood alcohol percentage as for motor vehicles. But the law as written seems a little ridiculous IMO.

Nothing has changed in regards to the rules on the Canadian side. A felony offense that occurred more than 5 years ago (typically a DWI) can be overlooked at the officer's discretion with a criminality waiver and a nominal fee of $7-800. Once you get past that you can look forward to being gouged by every retailer and resort owner from Vancouver to Halifax as well as being hounded multiple times a day by their rule-crazy game wardens. There's a reason why so many Canadians live so close to the U.S. and visit here as often as they can.
