"Poised to pounce?" It is positively perilous to poise to pounce prematurely. Presumably the people perform perfunctory preparations prior to pouncing.

Loss of aesthetic: A temporary condition. Benefits of fire to the forest when no human lives are lost and human structure damage is minimal; PRICELESS. It will grow back very nicely in time.

Nice work Ely, Babbitt, Tower, Town of Morse fire departments and all the Forest Service workers that helped with the fire. Amazing pictures!

"loosing its northwoods feel? Oh please, forest fires have *always* been a factor in the northwoods. What do you think Ely and the BWCA is? An Orlando-style tourist attraction?

So is the utility company going to pay for the fire? Maybe if they did it would be more economically feasible to be burying lines instead of keeping them above ground.

I "loved " the headline about Ely's entrance being scarred by the wildfire. Having gone there for vacations in the summer for many years, most people enter Ely on 169 from Virginia, although a few come up 21 from Babbitt. Forest fires are something that those folks deal with and the land will regenerate in time. But Hwy 1 is not a primary entrance to Ely unless you are flying in.
