Hartman: Struggling Mauer aims to stay positive

A strong start in April has given way to a poor May for the Twins star, a pattern followed by teammates.

Kirby would have said "It all starts with me" but I never heard anything close to that from Mauer. Everything is "we", but never "me" from Mauer. When you are getting 25% of the payroll, there is no "we".

Okay, I wanted Gardy gone but right now I'll settle for Vavra first. You can't fire all the Twins who are struggling, so replace the hitting "coach". I hear, former Twin, Mickey Hatcher is available. If I were Mauer, I'd be ashamed to be drawing a huge paycheck the way he's not hitting. The talent disappeared with the financial incentive.

I have heard in the past of a number of players renegotiating their contracts. Perhaps Mr. Mauer may consider doing so for the better of the team, the fans, and the team's current position in the standings. He is a class act, and a great ball player, there is no doubt about that, however, his contract appears to be hurting this team. Outdoor baseball is great, but this team needs help, and it could start there.

The Twins can run all the players they want back and forth between the majors and AAA, but the team attitude won't change. Gardy needs to go, along with others on the staff. How about instead of Mauer "renegotiating", he just focuses on baseball and starts earning his money? Put him back behind the plate where he is comfortable and go from there... If he gets hurt, we can probably find another .270 hitter that can hit a home run every 150 at bats.

Hello........anyone,anyone out there ?What has everyone in Minnesota been saying for TWO YEARS.Hey Joe,quit taking the first pitch cookie for a strike and then because your behind in the count swing at a pitch outside the strike zone. Last night three first pitch takes for strikes.....three weak outs. You also can fire the conditioning coach as suggested by me last year. Jim Marshall would be ashamed of these pansies.

"Ron Gardenhire will have the team five games below .500 by the All-Star break" -Dan Gladden. Don't think so Sid. The facts are what they are. The Twins came out on the scoreboard the winner in two games in Detroit. The Tigers gift wrapped both games. The Twins are probably not going to be handed games like those last two on any regular basis. Why is it never brought up in any column the fact that under Gardenhire the Twins have never played above .400 baseball against teams that had winning records. To me...that would distinguish a managers true worth.

I can't stand Joe Mauer interviews anymore. It's nothing but 'ya, ya know it's tough. We're not happy about this but it's a tough game and we're gonna keep battling' yada yada yada. He was on Dan Patrick not too long ago and I almost fell asleep in my car listening to the interview. He didn't say one thing remotely interesting or funny. He's morphed from Baby Jesus to The Robot. The Twins are so screwed with his contract now.
