Patrick Reusse: St. Mary's baseball tourney run conjures up memories

Today's overachieving Cardinals, who made some noise in the MIAC baseball tournament, bring to mind Max Molock's powerhouse Redmen of the 1970s.

i graduated in 1984 and played for max as well. we used old uniforms as practice uniforms, and as a freshman you got the oldest edition. so while upper classmen where in their 1970s phillies-esque doubleknits, i was wearing 1950s wool. i felt like walter johnson. i'll also never forget the first time i pitched in a freshman game in the fall. i struggled with my curve the summer before. max yelled from the benches to shorter my stride on my curve. TADA! the man knew his stuff. 1984 wasn't the same without him.

Patrick Reusse is at his best when he does the small town, small college writing. This guy has a steel trap for a mind when it comes to sports.

Nice story, Pat. My brother and I played for Max in the mid 50's and it brought back some great memories. Max truly had the finest baseball mind of any coach I have known. And his legacy lives on through his former players who have given back to the game through coaching at various levels and are still driving their opponents crazy with the delayed double steals for which Max was so famous.
