The 19-month-old sports center isn't taking in enough money to pay its bills and also is behind on sales-tax payments.

Vadnais Heights may need a "Taxpayer Bailout" but it had better come at the expense of city residents only. Else how will they ever learn any fiscal responsibility? But hey, we have plenty O' money for the Wilfs and adults who paint their faces purple, so why not? And why pray tell, if the city administrator backed this money pit does he still have his job?

Now they are going to be building one of these in Savage minus the ice sheets. Same promises from city officials that Vadnais made.

Same group want Edina to build one as well. Developers projected a glowing project that would cover bonding and be operationally profitable. Once studied by independent consultants it was found that it would not be operationally profitable nor would it be able to cover its set service at all.

Perhaps if they ever answered the phone they might get some business. For the field, they want only seem to want to rent out the whole thing, which limits the number of patrons. How about having open time and charging $5 an hour per person, they would get a lot of business from people and small groups wanting training time. Sure it won't be huge money, but it will pay for the lights and heat.

These things are boondoggles. Just like municipal golf courses were all the rage twenty years ago. They all went broke...or are going broke. City leaders need to pave streets and leave the recreational facilities to those who can afford them.....

I would have assumed that this was a COMMUNITY asset that required COMMUNITY financial support, not unlike a community park that requires ongoing maintenance or a community centre that requires ongoing financial support. If this isn't the case, then tear it down a let your youth wander the streets.

As I recall, these kind of places almost always fail to meet revenue expectations and come back for more funds. Of course, that includes the Target Center, Excel Center and, I am sure, the new Vikings stadium in the future as well.
