Chip Scoggins: Vikings rookie Rhett Ellison has his own beat

  • Article by: CHIP SCOGGINS , Star Tribune

Rhett Ellison is a musician and a scholar -- not unusual in his family of high achievers (Dad has three Super Bowl rings), but not your typical Vikings rookie.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Twin Cities best writer and storyteller, Chip Scoggins! Going to be pulling for Rhett.

Well done, Chip! An entertaining and informative read on this kid, who seems to perfectly compliment the emphasis on youth with character. Best of luck to you, Rhett!

He's got big shoes to fill, but if he can block anywhere near the level of Big Jim, he will be well worth the 4th round pick used on him. Good luck, kid.

Not every guy has the physical talent to play in the NFL. This story points to likelihood that Rhett will be able to handle the mental challenge of playing in the NFL. I've also read that he had a good relationship with Matt Kalil. I'm seeing some good chemistry forming also with a bright guy like Ponder playing with these two high achievers from USC. There are some very good signs that strong leadership will be forming on this Viking offense.

Nick Toon was taken, I believe, 6 spots above Rhett. Using our other 4th rounder to trade up 6 spots to get a proven receiver would have looked a lot better than getting a rookie free agent in the 4th round. Seems like a good kid but he had no business being drafted in the 4th round. Sorry for the negativity, but we all know it's true.

I was crossing my fingers that all comments would be positive, but alas it was not meant to be.....

@Bphat1 - "Seems like a good kid but he had no business being drafted in the 4th round" ................................. I respect your opinion, but it's not true. ESPN and NFL Network had him pegged as a 4th rounder.

ESPN and NFLN did not have him going in the 4th steavis, that's where the talk is coming from. That said, I don't think that Mel Kiper has a clue what's going on in NFL front offices. I hope he's the real deal, but he certainly doesn't have the flying sauce's build. His big question mark is if he has the strength and he didn't lift, so it remains to be seen. Another big question is does he have the violent nature to lay down that big punishing power block like Jim used to. I don't see it happening, but I hope it comes out and he plays with power.
