In the late 90s, on a July day, I was lucky enough to see a rare event on the west side of Vancouver Island close to the town of Tofino. What I saw was a gathering of all (I was told all) of the Vancouver Island Killer Whale pods gathered together for a south to north swim along the west side of the Island. I don't know how many pods there are that swim the waters off of Vancouver Island, but I was told it was a rare event for all of them to hang out with each other. It was very cool to see them breach every now and then as they made their way north.

I couldn’t believe it when a friend sent me this wonderful article about Vancouver Island. My husband and I were recently lured to Vancouver Island after living in the Twin Cities for over 20 years. We had planned to move to B.C. but had never heard of Nanaimo as we started our initial trip to choose a new place to call home. We went to the island because Victoria was on our wish list; however, as we drove through Nanaimo and saw the harbour, we fell in love with it. We came back three weeks later to start looking for a house and finally moved here in 2009. (We live in Departure Bay and can see the ferry from our house.) I have to fly back to the U.S. for work but it’s worth it, to live in this beautiful spot. What's funny is that the friend who emailed the article lives in Nanaimo, not the Twin Cities. Small world
