For some, gathering along Lake Superior and other North Shore rivers to net the tasty fish is a family tradition.

Can remember years ago when you could scoop them in by the net full. Some guys would bring garbage cans and fill them up in no time. We only wanted about 5 gallons, then we used to watch others as they continued to fill containers as if it were their last chance. One thing we did was bring a couple of garbage bags and pick up cans. It didn't take long to fill them either as some people were tossing them all over the place.

Grew up in Duluth and had some fun with the tourists on Park Point. We'd build a sliperry mound of smelt then fill people's buckets/pails/whatever while they were out dragging their first nets to shore. The folks were quite surprised to find that they were done before they started.
