Seeing as how Rottentomatoes shows the movie getting 78% positive reviews, it would seem that indeed you are "missing something."

Perhaps you recently had some too-spicy Indian food which blinded your view. This was one of my favorite movies in months. It was a treat to watch so many talented actors breeze through such entertaining subplots. I'm sorry to say I may have to read your reviews now with a more wary eye.

Colin, Let me preface my little missive by stating your reviews range consistently from very good to profound. We’re lucky to have you. Although your review on “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” was written with your traditional savoir-flair [sic], your overly caustic reaction to such an endearing movie begs the question “why?” The back-stories were solid, the sub plots lucid, and the character arcs were enjoyable to watch bloom - even if they were a bit obvious to some. There was not ONE formulaically, obnoxious body function reference, needless obscenity, or pointless nude scene. In an endless sea of shallow-minded Hollywood writing, this movie is to be commended for these mercies alone. Granted, there were a couple of older cliches – or are we simply to the age where we’ve heard most of them? Dev Patel may have slightly overplayed his part – but then this is germane to his usual Xanax-eligible characters. Judi Densch might be better at playing formidable than coquettish – but she’d be a pleasure to watch sorting laundry. Aside from these slight imperfections (if they are imperfections) the movie was a joy and deserves to be seen; especially by seniors. In the many years I’ve been attending screenings, this is one of the rarified times the majority of the audience applauded at the end of the movie and sat through the credits. (It was like being in Los Angeles.) This heart of this story was about love and possibilities. It is about second chances at an older age. It is about looking back but seeing beyond one’s disappointments and regrets. It looks to the beauty of rediscovering that new dreams really can be found in what lies ahead. It instills hope where hope was lost… You and I are close in age. After writing this post, I think I may see why you were so hard on this good movie. I suspect “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (like myself) may have struck a nerve in you? For me, I give it 3.5 out of four. Thanks for all your good work.

I've talked to more people who almost did not go to the show because of your bad (meaning you) review but luckily heard otherwise and found it to be a very delightful movie. So glad to see it is catching on with so many despite your way-off review. You can't go wrong with the Dames.
