While this inevitably will be a rebuilding year, a legitimate wild-card run could be in the equation for 2013.

So, 2012 is crap (we knew that). And, the hope is a slim chance at a wild card in 2013? Yuck! The odds are that the Pack is going to beat the hell out of the Vikes for many years to come. Why are we trying to build this mediocre team a new stadium again?

So we might get a wild card berth in 2013 if all the stars line up and everything goes perfect? Hey, nothing wrong with hoping all the stars line up in 2012!

arielbender: I suppose you are right. Regardless, I am not looking for a wildcard berth in 2013. I am looking forward and "hoping " for a competitive team in 2012.

In the NFL, there are a few bad teams, a few great teams and 20 teams that will go between 5-11 or 11-5 depending on schedule, injuries and breaks. Given the Vikes softer schedule this year and their extraordinary amount of injuries last year, I think that 9-7 is totally attainable -- even if it is a soft 9-7. You can be in rebuilding mode in the NFL and still go 9-7.

Well, I remember this time last year, there was a team that had a new coach, some cast-off cornerbacks, a quarterback that was iffy at best, a good running back, but not much else to brag about. Even the hardcore fans were not optimistic and were looking forward to getting in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. They were calling last year a rebuilding year. That team was the 49ers. In the NFL, anything is possible.

Dan, that's a long list of things that have to go right just to be considered for the playoffs. Aside from the illogical (Frazier has to be coach for the Vikes to make the playoffs? He's 6-16 as a head coach!) and the improbable (Ponder becoming a legitimate starting QB in the NFL), the Vikings are clearly the worst team in its division. The Vikings would have to leapfrog a division mate to make the playoffs, and that just looks like a long shot for at least the next three years.

If they double their win count or better yet, bump up close to .500, it will be successful year.
