A problem once confined largely to the core cities has silently spread due to foreclosures, job loss and mental illness. Shelters are overflowing.

According to "Christians" like Paul Ryan, the way to address poverty is to remove safety nets and divert that money for tax cuts. Thankfully, the US Conference of Bishops, made it abundantly clear that what Ryan(and the flunkies who support him) is doing is morally reprehensible.

How is it that in a country that "affords" billion dollar stadiums for billionaire owners and millionaire game players, we have such dire poverty? What a sad commentary on the priorities that we have as citizens/human beings.

It's hard to know about some of this. I work with economically disadvantaged persons who think they can't do without $150 cell phone service every month and who have purchased every large vehicle their credit would allow them to buy. Then when they couldn't pay the bills, they did end up without housing. Somehow we have to help folks make better choices. Ideas on how to do that?

Does the U.S. Conference of Bishops really think they have any credibility on any issue while they still try to minimize their complicity in pedophilia?

"According to "Christians" like Paul Ryan, the way to address poverty is to remove safety nets" Can you give us some proof of that?

Maybe a new publicly funded Vikings stadium can double as a homeless shelter. That way our public funding could go to a public need, not a private business. Or better yet, we could increase revenue to pay for adequate mental health and job training services and Wilf could pay for his own business so he wouldn't have to go on public welfare. We get people and Vikings off welfare. Win-win!

This is appalling, but not really surprising. You have a culture in America that reveres the rich (no matter how they became rich), and looks down upon the poor ("if they would only get a job, they wouldn't BE poor!"). Beyond that, you have the largest corporations in the world that don't pay any taxes, get rid of jobs here, and then hire people in China and India at a fraction of the cost. This needs to change.
