I have always heard of the Southern Minny league but I had no idea that the players were of such incredible quality.

Thanks for the great article Patrick! Brings back lots of Rochester baseball memories including the Southern Minny & also the Brooklyn vs Yankee World Series rivalry. Never knew Moose's nickname related to Mussolini, assumed it was his fairly big size. A couple days ago on WCCO radio heard a year old audio of Skowron comparing baseball then and now. In my 5th grade Rochester grade school class in '56 half the boys had crushes on Barb Skow. Often wondered if Barb & Moose might be related. I was told Sam Jones pitched with a tooth pick in his mouth. Moose & Yogi Berra were pals.

Thanks Mr Reusse for enlightening readers to some truly great days of baseball in southern Minnesota and also for letting people know about some great people from those times. Makes one hope that young folks will be interested in taking a few moments away from all their technology to hearing these great stories.

My dad coached 'B Squad' baseball for Dick Seltz for many of those years. I never knew Mr. Seltz played professional baseball. I knew him as a teacher/coach at Austin High School who fielded great teams at Marcusen Park. Great story. Thanks!

Great story from the past but every baseball fan should know that quality amateur ball is available to be seen for free right now all over parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. The River Falls, WI Fighting Fish were the 2011 Wisconsin Amateur Champions as well the local Legion team as well. The St. Croix Valley has teams that play quality ball with high school, college and middle agers that simply love baseball. Plum City, WI hosts the annual Memorial Day tournament. If you like baseball in its purest form, bring your folding chair and come out to Plum City for a beer and brat and be pleasantly surprised as this former Minnesotan was.

Thanks, Mr. Reusse. I knew the broad details about my uncle, Dick Seltz, but never heard many of the particular details until now. He's truly a class act. He and his brother, Rollie, were great athletes in their day. I appreciate you taking the time to write about Dick.
