Craig: Cornerback Claiborne could fill Vikings' worst gap

Sure, Matt Kalil is the safe pick and Justin Blackmon is intriguing, but a historically bad secondary needs immediate help.

I wish we had three number three picks.

Sorry, gotta disagree. Why don't we look at the stats of how often Ponder was sacked and hurried and injured. A team that is rebuilding needs to focus on one side of the line at a time. IF Ponder is the QB of the future, he needs WR's. You can't take a QB one year, a defensive player the next and keep with that strategy as you will never develop either one. The most important player is the QB on any team and if the QB is constantly picking himself off the ground and getting hurt.....you have nothing.

Don't try and be cute Speilman.....Ponder needs Kalil. Two defensive backs aren't going to stop the likes of Rodgers, Cutler and Stafford. The NFL has become a passing league and the Vikes need to get on the bandwagon.

It makes perfect sense--the Vikings believe that Kalil 1st and corner 2nd round offers far better draft value (and less of an overall talent gap) than Claiborne 1st and a LT in 2nd. In other words, the corner that they draft in Round 2 will be closer in skill to Claiborne than any LT remaining would be in skill to Kalil. Which is why I expect them to take Kalil at 3 and Janoris Jenkins at 35 if he's still on the board.

Pick Kalil. Trade next year's first for Jacksonville's first from this year and take David DeCastro. The line will be fixed for a decade. Then start working on the other bits. Blocking and tackling are the two most important parts of football. Fix the blocking, fix the tackling, and then worry about receivers and route defenders.

I yearn for the days when the Vikings defense struck fear in the hearts of even the best offenses the Vikings faced, and when they had special teams that were game changers, the Vikes can always trade for offensive line help and that is where experience is really needed anyways. I would love to see an aggressive defensive backfield that will strike fear in the hearts of any receiver venturing into the Vikings defensive backfield, and I think the Vikes going after any available DBs that are available from either LSU or Alabama especially after seeing the way they played last year, would be a well used draft choice.

While I'm not disagreeing that MC is a great pick, it's fair to point out he has strictly been a man cover corner not a zone. Guys have trouble adjusting schemes in the pros. If we were to be using man cover more often then I'd lean towards picking MC. But there are five or six really good corners available after the top three who played zone in college...and had multiple INTs last year. SS is a bigger need too. Barron or the kid from ND would be great to bolster our 'lost' safety unit. But if we do go Kalil and Hill is available in the second, or Jeffery, then get the receiver and do Dbacks in rounds three and four.
