Scoggins: Gophers turning to Teague not exactly a Hail Mary

While his previous employer did not have a football program, to say he doesn't have a prayer of being successful is a stretch.

Football is just another 8 letter word. So don't worry about the VCU "football inexperience..." experience that Norwood brings to the table. Will our newest administrator out of his league in a football dominated Big Ten Conference? Time will tell Golden Gopher Football Fans... ; 0 ) I wish our new AD much success. He has taken on a big job...a difficult job and a potentially very rewarding job. In choosing this candidate, prexy k has ushered in a new era and by introducing Norwood to the media and the fans, prexy k has, indeed brought in "his own guy..." and the good prexy now has a: "...Teague all his own..." running his athletic department. Will Norwood make drastic changes? Will Norwood become fatigued running a Football Program or will Mr. Teague be intrigued with all of the possibilities for revenue enhancement provided by TCF BANK STADIUM, and all the fund-raising possibilities that the Football Program can provide? Will Norwood Teague light a fire in the AD Department and around all the streams and lakes...the nooks & crannies, the hills and woodlands through out the Great State of Minnesota for Golden Gopher Football? IF he can help do that, we should build a statue of him and add a line from the Beatles NORWEGIAN WOOD to the ROUSER: "...he lit a fire...isn't it good...prexy k's Norwoodgian hire..." ; 0 ) I wish Noorwood Teague the very best. I hope he has much success. However, I will watch to see the actions he takes and the results he produces. I will watch what he does rather than to merely listen to what he says. Good luck Mr. Teague. Welcome to the Big Ten Conference. The end of the badger joel macturi decade has finally come. For that, I am very happy and bjm is officially relieved...What a long, strange trip our "macturian candidate" has taken us on... So, football, or NO football at VCU, Norwood knows that you fill the stands if you run the ball and can stop the run... ; 0 ) ; 0 )

This decision is taking a big chance on a young guy with some success and potential, and probably fits the U budget. With a major sports program in long term decline, that can't possibly be the right hiring decision. And how does the University end up with only one candidate? Did they reach the point that no experienced highly qualified candidates were interested in the position? The process itself seems flawed and it is not surprising the U ends up with a high risk choice. I hope he does well, but the University deserved a better choice.

"one finalist" is because The Kaler led U was gaming the system. They wanted the search to be private in violation of MN laws, so they kept the real finalists secret and reported that there was only one finalist. Time for the Legislative Auditor or AG to investigate by reviewing the minutes of the meetings and interviewing committee members. That said they may have gotten it right with this selection

Like Teague, I've also watched a lot of college football the past 30 years, but that doesn't qualify me to oversee a football program. Unfortunately, the U is trying to hire on the cheap and this is all they can attract with our sad state of athletics. Lastly, How can Jon Anderson not at least be considered a finalist, even as the token local guy?

riverbirchApr. 24, 12 8:12 AM

Great Hire, now get to work.

qiguanaApr. 24, 12 8:17 AM

The reason they have only one finalist is that State law requires the names of all the finalists to be disclosed. The candidates don't WANT their names disclosed if they don't get the job. So the U only declares one finalist.

John Anderson isn't a football guy either, and how do you know he wasn't considered?

tomheuApr. 24, 12 8:39 AM

Good column; right on target.

Chip, you ask: "Doesn't Teague at least deserve a chance to prove that"? Well of course he does. But the Gopher fan base was counting on the fact that the expensive Atlanta search firm (the same one that failed with the Football coach candidates) and the 23-person selection committee would come up with a PROVEN candidate, NOT ONE that forced us to 'wait and see' due to the obvious gap in his resume. When you have to start out making excuses for the person you hired, you didn't get the job done. Does Teague understand the need to win at football and hockey? I certainly think so. But has he demonstrated an ability to do so? Clearly, he has not. So let's not dismiss the anxiety shown (again) by the Gopher fan base. It's real, and it's well placed. Accepting second-tier candidates and hoping they can learn is not what we expected. Again.

Barry Alvarez isn't a basketball guy, however, the Badgers' basketball program isn't too shabby..
