NFL draft preview: running backs

looking at the lists, one thing stands out to me: running backs who are performing well in the NFL (the top rushers from last season) are guys who were productive in NCAA football. 40 times and combine/pro-day workouts say something about, say, a defensive tackle's actual strength or a linebacker's speed in the open field... but a running back's potential productivity is more weighted to intangibles that are hard to measure in a workout - drive, field vision, patience (setting up blocks), determination (getting the extra half a yard), etc; but those intangibles DO show up in on-field, college production (weighted towards offensive system and number of touches, of course, too). Ray Rice is a perfect example - too short and too slow, everyone said, but he was a record-breaking rusher at Rutgers... and now is an all-pro in the NFL.

that said, david wilson from virginia tech looks like a keeper - kind of a michael bennett type of runner. very productive.
