This experience on Hay Creek and other creeks of SE Minnesota are endangered by oil companies that want to mine frac sand from the bluffs and hills surrounding Hay Creek. Or more correctly, they could literally haul the bluffs away. Demand for the sandstone that composes our very landscape is unlimited. You can see the same fight being played out from Red Wing to northern Iowa and into Wisconsin. You don't know what you've got until it's gone!

Ditto all of the above. Hay Creek is right next to a potential silica frac sand mining site there- already purchased by an energy company. Trout Unlimited has spent thousands of dollars to rejuvenate Hay Creek for trout fishing. Thousands of people also go there to camp, ride horses and bikes. They won't anymore if there are clouds of dust blowing in the wind and no mire trout because they've been choked out by run-off and higher water temps. What will it take to convince the DNR, MPCA and local government to JUST SAY NO??

Makes me want to go fish, but, boy, today's wind would sure toss a fly something nasty. Speaking of silica mines, as well as an opener breakfast, Chatfield has one of those that has swallowed an entire hill above Mill Creek. Maybe in a few years the Chosen Valley (as the area calls itself) can switch to Flattened Valley, or Former Valley, or Just Another Minnesota Flat Spot.
