To cut costs, Golden Valley this week is expected to join Hopkins in asking Hennepin County to take over its dispatching.

All dispatching should be done at the county level anyway.

I don't think Hennepin would want Minneapolis, which is just as big in the amount of personnel and the number of calls per year. Personally I think if a city no longer is getting the funds they need from the county and state, then the city should just let the county take the reigns and if the county isn't being paid appropriately via state funds (aka loss of LGA Funds), then it becomes the state who is responsible to provide the service.

Sheriff Rich Stanek has the practical and sensible approach, as usual. He is pretty good on most issues most of the time.

That is the complaint of East Grand Forks, Crookston and Thief River Falls have Polk and Pennington County Sheriffs Offices do the dispatching.

Suburban cities, including mold had an open offer for years to get into the hennepin operation. They didn't join because they wanted to direct how dispatch is done-they wanted local control. Now because of budget pressure they are ready to shed 911. Hennepin closed the door several years ago after offering everyone a chance to get in free before spending money on 911 planning. The declined and now want in. There should be some price of admission now minimally for one time costs associated with transferring the service. It's also pretty easy for the sheriff to support this, he doesn't have to raise property tax and gets more resources. Maybe 911 should be under administration like it is in Minneapolis.

All of the south central and south eastern State Patrol Troopers are dispatched out of Rochester now. There is no reason why everything cannot be at the county level.

All suburbs should be required to use county dispatch services even if the suburbs have to pay something for it. There are efficiencies of scale in running a 911 center for the entire county. Does a 911 center for one suburb really have enough calls to keep the dispatchers busy 24 hours a day? A 911 center probably has to have at least two dispatchers on duty at all times for breaks and such even when call volume doesn't warrant two dispatchers.

Should the county charge extra even though it would be getting the 911 dollars from the residents that is not now getting revenue? Sounds like double taxation to me. Now's the time for cities like Hopkins and GV to jump in as long as the county is expanding it's operating base. The county taxpayers are paying for the new base anyway and GV & Hopkins residents are already Hen. taxpayers. The extra funding would already be available. What's the issue?

Jcinmn- "what"s the issue?" I think the primary issue will be that police fire and city officials will have a hard time letting go directing the type of 911 service they have ben getting plus the dispatchers in the smaller units are probably doing other duties. But they can't afford the equipment upgrades and ongoing costs anymore. But the county also needs time to budget and plan. Multi million dollar reorgs don'happen overnight especially if it involves multiple units of government each with their own electeds and tax base.
