So--the DNR is worried about hook and line anglers being hard on "concentrations" of spawning walleyes? But 50,000 dead, spawning walleyes at Lake Mille Lacs means nothing? Now the Commish says "it's not a conservation issue" at Lake Mille Lacs. Yet this guy, a fisheries biologist, says it is a "conservation" issue. LOL Amazing...and embarrassing.

Mille Lacs Lake has nothing to do with the DNR. That is a court mandated issue. If anyone is to blame you can point the finger at Bud Grant. The state had a deal worked out with the tribe and Bud Grant threw a public hissy fit, and ended up screwing the entire situation. Also, remember changing the fishing opener was the idea of our worthless legislator, that can't do their own jobs let alone others....before you bash the DNR get your facts straight people.

Factor...In fact, the courts put the whole thing into the Mn. DNR hands. In fact, the 8th District told the Mn. DNR to negotiate with the Tribal regime and reach a plan that is in the best interests of public safety, public health and CONSERVATION--in an EQUITABLE fashion. And the court, in fact, gives the Mn. DNR the abilty, if anyone of the three issues listed, is not being done by the Tribal regime. Now, the "settlement" was anyting but good compared to what you have now. The facts tell the truth when and if you read the settlement you refer to and who it was with.

Just because Steve says it's so, doesn't mean it is. And don't disagree with him, he's always correct and everyone with a differing opinion is wrong. Now that's amazing.... and embarrassing!

I had heard that indeed, the opener had moved to May 5th, apparently this isnt so, according to this story.

tcatheartApr. 15, 12 8:20 PM

knight63- it hasn't yet. The bill passed the house a week or two ago. It now has to pass the senate and then be signed by Dayton to become a "law" this year. Especially seeing as we have had some cold weather (snow tomorrow?) lately, I really hope they don't move it. Just leave it be, there is no reason for arm chair biologists, aka legislators, to be sticking their nose in this.

You ever hear of north dakota, or south dakota ? They have no closed season on game fish. The missouri river is awesome fishing.I would say that their fishing is just as good as mn's maybe better ? (there fish dont taste as good though) If a few walleyes have not spawned it wont be the end of the world . Just my opinion. Have a great opener, whenever it is.

The DNR oversight ability of the Lake Mille Lacs fishery related to Tribal harvrest will come to light very soon...at the federal level.

sjfellegyApr. 16, 12 8:02 AM

The fishing regs in other states are not comparable to what happens in Mn. Fishing pressure is not comparable in the Dakotas, as one example,to Mn. Regs are directly relative to the lakes/fishing pressure etc. Not just across the board regs.....

Change it, don't change it, don't care..this decison is purely political and economic, has not a thing to do with fish populations..dumb argument.
