Stand-up move by the student-athlete... certain D-1 schools whose coaches cheated and yet kept their ill-gotten gains should take note of his action.

Kudos to the student for outing himself. More kudos if he would have refused to compete, but that is awfully hard for the modern day mentality to accept. Better late than never is a position I try to teach my students--it's never too late to make a sincere apology and ask for forgiveness. Some will forgive, others won't, but you will have the satisfaction of knowing you tried to right a wrong. Way to go, young man.

What was the violation?

With the constant balance between accepting comments, or not, on an article. This one strikes me as one that should not be commented on. It is a high school student, and regardless of age the issue and lack of facts, make it wide open for innocuous debate.

@GreenBayGuy: I (think I) understand your opinion, but suspect that most will comment in the positive. The student violated the stated rules and turned himself in. While unfortunate, I think this is laudable behavior, and worthy of recognition.

I know nothing about this guy, but I'm more impressed by his integrity than I would be by any medal he could have won.

Was mom fired as coach? Why? Did the school tell this stand up kid, according to all the comments, to either turn himself in or they would? This article is woefully short on information. Why should I applaud a kid for cheating then later having second thoughts and coming clean? I want to know what he did, and under what circumstance he turned himself in. In today's age, I'm not going to give any athlete the benefit of the doubt. I think he was getting pressure, so he wisely chose the path of least damage. You all can continue on your fairy tale he's such a good boy trains of thought. lol

You virtually need dual degrees in law and chemistry to compete in amateur athletics these days. And private, recruiting schools still win everything.

Where is the integrity and support of the parents?! This kid seems to have been pushed forward to handle it on his own. Somebody reading this knows something and should share it here with the readers.

Privacy laws, etc...and the threat of lawyers will keep whatever the reasons for his ineligibility hidden, unless he decides at some point to go public. If he is no longer enrolled in the school and his mother is no longer the coach - then why get your undies in a bunch? He did the right thing, his mom isn't coaching there anymore - doesn't matter if she resigned, non-renewed, or was terminated. It's a private school - they can do what they want with coaches.
