Reusse: Money trail leads to Twins' wise intentions

  • Article by: PATRICK REUSSE , Star Tribune

The Twins didn't splurge in free agency, and that shows their realistic -- and wise -- goal for 2012 is becoming respectable again.

Pat is right, as he usually is. A nice way of saying what we all know. Bill Smith made many bad trades and deals (like Nishi) that are going to take at least 2 years to recover from, and maybe 3 or 4. Bye bye Alexi, we can't wait till mid june for you to play big league ball.

Sorry to say....this team is a train wreck. Smith's management was a disaster; the usually flush minor league development system is virtually empty; Mauer's contract is a millstone around their neck. Get ready for 8 years of the Mauer contract and them being a .500 team--at very best. Can't trade him for anything, and they'd have to eat a big chunk of the contract to do a trade.....read Rangers/Alex Rodriguez....they only started rebuilding after eating his contract after the Yankees trade. Just thinking about this give me bi-lateral leg weakness......

Smith ruined this team for years to come. It is fun watching Willingham wave at the ball as it goes by, though. Reminds me of the futility of my own little league days.

Your so right Pat. I am already done watching them. the question now is how many will they lose before they win one, 1 and 10 I think. also I can't stand the twins TV people and how they try to sugar coat everything almost puked during Rayn interview.

I wish I had saved the posts criticizing me for saying two years ago that Billy Smith was wrecking the Twins. All the homers had a field day defending him. He was a blight and it shows the idiocy of the FO that he is still with the Twins in any capacity. If Pohlad has any interest in this team or any knowledge of baseball, he will get rid of the Prez, Gardy and his boys like Joe Vavra and acknowledge the Twins are in rebuilding mode. I watched the Astros today and they are playing with fire and desire, despite their youthful talent and the fact their FO dealt off most of their best players. At least they are interesting. Terry Ryan is Bill Smith II. Carroll had a nadful of hits the whole spring and is 0 for 2012. Marquis is not even a #5 rotation guy. Pavano is over the hill and Liriano is a shell of his former self. Baker is an underachiever. Joe Mauer is about the 14th best first baseman in the American League and will never again reach his potential. Casilla is a joke. This team is a trainwreck. The real problem is that Gardenhire is uncomfortable coaching young players, he is at his best with veterans and our veterans stink. 4 down, 96 to go before Gardy is shown the door.

6 chances for Casilli...6! Wow if I was given that many chances after failing at my job...I would still be working and not retired. LOL

How in gods name is this team built to win now? Thats just plain stupid.

Heck, the fans don't get it at all that you can't learn the game by being thrown into the big leagues. Valencia is the prime example. When he had a hot couple of months at the end of 2010, they ripped Gardy (like he has all the say) for not promoting Valencia earlier. Some fans said that Danny GIDP should have been up in 2009, for crying out loud. Watching Valencia now, anyone can see why he wasn't up earlier. This team is counting on him, too. It's not just Casilla who needs to get it going.

Well said. If this team can win 75 and allow some young players to sink or swim (valencia and cassilla) it should be considered a success.

Question: What evidence does anyone have that Ryan knows how to build a team? Gardenhire is his man and most of the non-prospects in the minors were actually brought in during Ryan's previous watch. Ryan's specialty is one and done, how soon we forget. Question: Why, again, is Minn. Twins only official MLB website that does not have a working fan forum? This upgrading disclaimer for last 5 years is getting old Pohlads. Afraid the kudo's would be few and far between.
