Not everyone needs a college degree!! We need garbage collectors, mailpersons, truck drivers, cab drivers, restaurant workers, etc...... Don't need a college degree for that!!

How about we address the real issue: rising tuition and fees. At the U over the last ten years tuition has increased 165%. The problem does not stem from loans and grants not keeping up with the costs, it is the rising cost of college!

Yeah, so what happened next? What did these democrat politicians promise to give to these people? Or did they just say "we'd like to help you pay all your bills but the mean old republicans won't let us."

huggybear28 is right. There are many opportunities to reduce the cost structure of our colleges. I don't understand how they could have risen so much. I feel for the students but a Govt bailout is not the solution. Our students are walking into a soft job market and are competing with a very well educated global job market. Carrying 25 to 40 grand of debt would be a big bummer...

Its hard to have a strong economy or a strong country if everyone is ignorant. We have enough low skilled people walking around, higher education is the best hope.

The REAL problem is Government involvement in the Education industry. Just like with Medicare, and rising Health Care costs, Government involvement has led Colleges to increase costs as they see fit. The Colleges know that Uncle Sam will supply Students with all the "Borrowing Options" they need in order to pay for their educations. Unfortunately, HIGH Health Care costs can land some people in financial trouble, and the same happens with HIGH Education costs. My guess is that if the Government offered LESS Financial Aid to Students, the Colleges would be forced to lower their costs accordingly. For right now, the Government's Financial Aid plans are just supporting another BUBBLE that keeps on getting Bigger-and-Bigger. It's anyone's guess as to how much longer this scenario can continue as it has for the past 30, or so, years.

A generation ago most of a student's public college tuition was paid by the state. Today the majority is paid by the student, mostly through loans. We need to decide if we still value education as a public good.
