Why the rush to extend his contract? Next years team should be at NCAA tourney level. If players leave again or he just fails to improve the program, then they can move on.

Bad move! Mediocrity at best does not breed contract extensions unless you are Joel Mautri, ala Brewster and Monson. Lets see who leave the program this year. Time to get Flip under wraps!!

maturi wants one more chance to leave his mark on u of m athletics.... everytime he has given an extension to a coach it has turned into a fiasco. for 5+ years tubby has shown what kind of program he can run here, and its not very impressive. 1 NCAA tournament, no tournament wins, and a hideous big ten record. at any other 'major' university in the country this would be completely unacceptable and he'd be gone. but here, we want to give him an extension. let the new AD decide what to do with tubby after next season, which i guarantee will be more of the same. don't forget about the priority seating fiasco that maturi has instituted for next season. the combination of tubby ball and priority seating should equate to the barn being half empty for most of the season. time to pick up a badger t-shirt and follow bo-ball.

Why? Why? Why? Who's leading this? As others have said, let's see how next year goes. Let the new AD make the decision. They're basing this on a four game run in the NIT? How about considering the 5th game blowout? How about considering the 7-22 record in the last 29 conference games? 6th, 7th, 6th, 9th & 9th place finishes in the conference gets an extension? It will always amaze me what they "SETTLE" for at the U. This is crazy.

midwestgolf...if you are going to complain at least get your facts right. Tubby has been to two NCAA tournaments not one.

Clearly a lot of people on here don't understand how college basketball works. Let me explain something to you...recruits aren't going to commit to Minnesota if Tubby only has two years left on his deal. Most kids who go to the U for basketball (we aren't Kentucky) plan on staying for 4 years. When a kid signs he wants to know that he will have the same coach the whole time. The U may as well fire Tubby right now if they don't extend him because he won't be able to effectively do his job (i.e. recruit high caliber recruits) without an extension. And we need to build that practice facility already...even Nebraska just built one and they have had far less basketball success than the U.

Tubby has underachieved here. For $1.8MM, that arena needs to be full. His w-l record in the big ten is pretty much identical to the Monson's record. I don't get this at all. I am really, really confused by this move.

This decision should be left to new AD. At this point Tubby has no excuses for not putting a Top Tier Big Ten squad on the floor next year. Let the new AD evaluate him instead of throwing another 10 million at him. If he's let go at the end of next year that 10 mil would be a pretty good start on a new practice facility. Recruiting can certainly wait a year with all the Freshmen and Sophomore talent they have in place.
