Minnesota's 2012 fishing opener would be moved up a week to avoid a Mother's Day conflict if a proposal clears the Legislature.

Wow, this is such an important subject. Wasting time while jobs and a budget bill die for lack of efforts on the part of the Republicans. Social issues are more important than the welfare of the citizens of Minnesota. And we pay these guys to waste our time and money, unbelievable!!

It's way too late to change the opener! People have already book lodging and taken time off for travel to the resort of their choice. It's an unusual winter, but it will probably go back to the same type of winter as previous years.

We have a date that should be set according to when spawning occurs, then set it according to spawning. The fishing tourist industry would benefit the most from a well managed opening time, wouldn't it?

Leave the fishing opener date as is. There are a lot on mothers that fish and would enjoy fishing on mothers day. How about the turkey hunters who also fish. Those hunters who selected dates to hunt to not coinside with the fishing opener will not be happy to see the dates change. The proposed date change is a bad idea brought up by politicans who should have better things to worry about.

As a mom of 2 twenty-something boys and a husband who all love to fish, I say leave the date as is. The best Mothers Day gift for me is having an empty house so I can relax!

Mother's Day is just another "made up" holiday for the greeting card, forist, candy, and restaurant industries anyway. If you need a special "day" to dedicate spending with either of your parents, how about the state just "swap" mother's day and father's day. That way we can all go fishing with our Dads in May, and dote over Mom in June. Sound stupid? Not any dumber than legislating fishing opener to avoid Mother's Day...

"@pinelakelind - Wow, this is such an important subject. Wasting time while jobs and a budget bill die for lack of efforts on the part of the Republicans. Social issues are more important than the welfare of the citizens of Minnesota." It may have escaped your notice that this bill is authored by DFLers. You may want to retract your 'outrage'

I think this is a good idea. I hope they move sucker netting and spearing season, too. If we have to wait til May 1st, there won't be a sucker to be found in the creeks.
