Bobo, back in 1979 everybody said the same thing about a rookie named Gretzky . . .

Too bad he gave up being educated to play in the NHL. I wish they wouldnt do that to these kids! 5'11" 175, another PMB. At least he will feel what it is like to get bullied and pounded into a ball, for a few weeks. Hopefully he doesnt get hurt.

Now he has an entire summer to not worry about CHEM101 and American History and instead focus on hockey, training and building weight. Just like I don't need to weight train to write code, Zucker doesn't need a 4-year degree to play hockey :)

Moosehawk-you are right. Lets just pluck these kids that are well on their way to being educated, and bring them to the pro's where they can wreck their bodies, make millions, spend it all, end up not being able to move without massive amounts of pain killers and are broke a year after they retire. That isnt being selfish, no.

Except the rookie in question had just been 3rd in the WHA in scoring at 17 and had averaged a goal and 3 points a game as a 16 year old major junior.

While I wish pro sports didn't take kids out of high school or out of college before they finished their education, the courts have ruled they can do so, because kids who sued over the question won, claiming it was a violation of their rights to be denied the chance to play pro sports. Maybe Zucker doesn't need college now, but his career could end in an instant due to an injury. Even if he is lucky enough to retire at the ripe old age of 40, he still has half a lifetime ahead of him, and a college education would really help him in any future jobs.

These "kids" can return to college after their pro careers end, and they'll do it with millions in the bank. College is over-valued as it is, there really isn't much reason for a future millionaire to finish school at 22.

I value education and feel it's very important to succeed in life, and I spent a great deal of time working my way through college (and have an MBA). Now that I'm older and more mature - I'd give it up in a heartbeat if I had the chance to give pro sports a shot...

Pro sports are not taking these kids out of school. These kids are making their own choice to leave. Its what they think is best for THEIR life. Because that is what it is....THEIR life!

At the league minimum salary of $700k he'll be making more than 99.9% of all college grads.
