Minnesota regulators put off vote on haze reduction

Still no jobs on the Range so of course we're hearing crickets about this. Too bad the air quality has to suffer for lack of opportunities up north.

There are jobs on the range. Lots of them, in mining and related industries and businesses. We make a heck of a lot more money to support families on the range than canoe outfitters do. So one of my company's lines of production should shut down, putting hundreds of folks out of work so "visitors" can have a slightly better view? I think this is one of the most absurd things I have seen come out of D.C. and St. Paul for a long time. The forest fire that was allowed to destroy millions of acres for what seemed like forever did more to harm air quality AROUND THE WORLD than the occassional change in the wind that puts a haze over a doggone view in the BWCA! Canoeists-I have an idea, stay home and cruise the mighty clean Mississippi. Be truly green and don't drive 250 miles each way to get some exercise! We live and work here, you do not so please don't tell us how we may or may not make a living! Until you drive up here in cars made of pine that run on renewable prarie grass you are a bunch of whiny hypocrites!

Haze is the visible manifestation of air pollution. There are a lot of chemicals and particles that aren't particularly good to breathe. Haze is a big contributor to athsma, lung cancer, heart attacks, etc. It's not obvious why, but yes, heart attacks are more prevalent on high air-pollution days. So don't believe for a minute that this is an aesthetic problem for canoeists. It's a public health issue. And there are technologies for running an industry cleanly. It's not jobs vs public health.
