Is Minnesota the only state with sports teams named after wild game? Sounds like just another nail in the coffin as to why this provincial loserville can never win the Big One.

Geez DNR, let their population increase. You are going to screw this one up as well.

Did any of you actually read the article.....?? Because if you did you would have read that it said having a hunting season isn't the reason for the moose decline, rather it is from a parasite of some sort

I'm glad to see the DNR is not caving to everyone calling for the end of moose hunting in Minnesota. They finalized their moose management plan at the end of last year, and it looks like they are sticking to it. It's easy to blame the hunters for the decline, but anyone with a bit of common sense knows that is not the case. If the moose harvest is what the DNR is predicting, about 2.5% of the bull moose population will be taken. That is not even close to enough to affect the long term survival of the species in the state. The information obtained from the hunt is also invaluable. I was lucky enough to draw a tag and harvest a moose last fall in the middle of the BWCA. We took something like 12 vials of blood, tissue, hair, lung, and liver samples for the DNR to use in their studies. In 5 days of hunting we saw 17 moose, including a bull I called to within 10 yards of us, that we decided not to harvest. The entire hunt was probably the most incredible experience of my life. At some point the hunt will probably have to be called off, and if that has to happen, I just hope it is for reasons besides pressure from people who have probably never even seen a moose before in their lives. It's sad to see such a magnificent animal declining like this, but to blame the DNR and hunters is a little ridiculous.

I'm not blaming the hunters for the decline. I just think its a shame to kill such a magnificent creature. I also don't think it would hurt to take a few seasons off and let the numbers increase.

jg1983: "The entire hunt was probably the most incredible experience of my life". Talk about a life of austerity and privation. You need to get out more often. There is more to life than killing animals and there are other incredible experiences to be had.

A Star Tribune headline from year 2020: "Minnesota moose population is gone. DNR is debating whether to cancel the moose hunting season"
