Congratulations to the students at Nellie Stone Johnson! They, indeed, are competing at a high level. I wish them the very best at their next competition. It is nice to have this teacher with high expectations for them. AND congratulations to the Strib for printing one of the wonderful things that happen in the Minneapolis Public Schools on a daily basis. I would like to hear more of the amazing things the teachers and students are doing there. Certainly there are challenges in urban schools, but I think one of the differences is the positive press schools in the 'burbs get on a more regular basis vs our urban schools.

Hats off to all those working to make the Nellie Stone Johnson school chess team a stong positive experience for all of the students participating! I have been to their practice sessions and the focus and self-discipline of fhe students is amazing. And thanks to the North Community YMCA for hosting the sessions. More acitivities like this would truly build better academic success and better communities. theaney 3/28/12
