The issue at the U is not Grant, glad to have him on board. The issue is Coach Lucia and his robot style coaching approach. He doesn't seem to be able to connect with and motivate players for the big games. Watch him behind the bench, just no emotion at the big moments. What do you expect from his players? Look at his comment about Coach Grant in this column - he says he was not a elite player but a good player. I am sure Grant found those comments inspiring.

From what we saw when Grant played for the Gophers, he was rather inspiring to his teamamtes. He was more than an average player and played about 5 years as a pro so wasn't too bad. When Lucia said,"You don't have to be an elite player to be a decent coach," he was probally referring to him self and his playing days at Notre Dame. Go Gophers!!!!

Let's be honest almost any college player can bounce around the pro's for 5 years, like Grant did in the AHL. Lucia hit the nail on the head. Was Potulny an All American? I'd have to look it up but, I don't think he was even ALL WCHA. He was a solid player, a good leader and will be a fine coach. I think the people who hate Lucia will always hate him and thats fine. I don't think he puts to much stock in what a bunch fans think. Lucia is stoic(not sure on spelling) and me personally I like that rather than a coach who looks like he is riled in the big situation. GO GOPHERS!!!

"POTULNY WINS IT', man I could watch that game everyday. Even from watching the couple minute highlight clip on youtube you can feel the tension and the pressure that was in the X that night, and the release after the game winner. It was awesome. Hopefully Grant is good at recognising players like himself, because they're going to need 1 or 2 with all the skill coming in the next couple years.

Its time for the fellers to strap on the gear extra tight!!! this weekend could be a real BARN BUSTER!!!

I am really hoping Lucia has his team prepped. I do NOT want to see another Holy Cross exit. They are favored, have more talent than BU and should win. And they are playing in the known confines of the X, which is an advantage regardless of what Lucia says. Could be a special weekend, as I still believe this will be the last we see of Bjustad. His career in the NHL should rival those of Vanek and Kessel.

GP has a ton of ND character in him. Where ever he played, he would have been appreciated. Fortunately for the gophs, he called Don. Great to see him being a HC some day soon.

Grant is lucky Don gave him a job with zero experience in coaching. Don was looking for a "yes" man and he got the perfect one, grant should go cut his teeth somewhere else and see if he can really coach without the insulation of UofM and Don holding his hand. Kowalski scored the biggest goal of the national championship game, it wasn't on the power play it was with the goalie pulled, if he doesn't score its a whole different world, maybe kowalski, Johnny Pohl, Ballard, Martin, Welch, Talakson, Hause, Taff, and all the other players might be mentioned along with the championships, they won it off of their backs and all those guys played in the NHL and are still playing, I am sure they just laugh when you media people mention grant just like everyone else does.

Big fan, are you machineshop? Did you mean Tallackson, Hauser, Taffe, and Koalska? And FYI, plenty of prospective coaches start their career in the comfort zone of their alma mater to get some experience before moving on to run their own show. Scott Sandelin started at North Dakota, Mel Pearson started at MTU, Dean Blais started at UMTC. This career path seemed to work okay, so don't start criticizing Grant Potulny for taking the same road.

"Grant was a good player, but not an elite player." Why do you think Lucia that it takes elite players to win championships? Teams like UND and Denver find the right players, not elite players. Grant was part of an era of Gopher players that played for the team and did the little things. Your current players are the best but aren't hard workers and see Minnesota as a stop on the way to the NHL.
