Reversing Greenland ice sheet's melt-off could be impossible

If that ice disappears, sea level could rise 23 feet.

What we do to Earth we do to ourselves.

I'm amazed that the republicons will believe every word from the hate radio and faux noise, but refuse to believe the vast majority of the world's scientists!

of course we can't stop it, just as we didn't cause it. GW and cooling are natural phenomena which aren't controlled by man.

So many ignorant people - from alleged climate scientists to main stream news media, and all the way thru to the public who uncritically believe them. Our climate goes thru clear, distinct cycles - appx. every 110,000 to 120,000 years we go from a cold glacial period to a warm inter-glacial peak. We are currently in a warm inter-glacial - near the peak. Which is ALWAYS followed by a collapse back into a glacial period. History shows in the past the collapse to a glacial cold minimum takes appx 2000 years. We also know (see image below) that current sea levels are appx 7 meters (21 feet) lower than we have clear visual evidence the planet has seen before. Instead of the alarmist "sky is falling" claptrap we so often hear these days, the truth is the story is correct - we KNOW sea levels could increase by as much as 20 feet as the ice sheet melts over the next 2,000 years as we reach the intergalactic warm peak "tipping point" And then we know pretty much for a fact that temps will fall 7 to 10 degree C over the next several thousand years as we race to a glacial cold bottom. Whether we are on the planet or not. http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/image76.png http://www.trackforum.com/images/WARMING/Vostok+Temp-Co2-Mh4-Dust-Solar-Glacial.jpg

go220mph - your referenced link is broken. That aside, whether we are on the planet in the future or not does not justify what we are doing to it and ourselves now. Just because the planet may experience these swings from warm to cold is no reason to plunder and pillage it while we can. It is our home. Would you burn down your home just because you can? I believe that is called suicide.

Isn't its ice-sheet land status a major reason Greenland has remained essentially uninhabited over the centuries?

Yawn. Take a look at the weather patterns from the 1930s (dust bowl) to the 1970s (mini ice age), and the Greenland sheet was increased with no involvement from humans. We're now in a warming cycle similar to late 1800s to 1930s. In ten years, we'll be beginning another cooling cycle. Yawn.

mn2nice - there are TWO links - both work

And you miss the point - there is NOTHING AT ALL UNUSUAL in what our climate is doing. It is doing exactly what it has every roughly 110,000 to 125,000 years for a million years or more. We are nearing the peak of an inter-glacial warm period - exactly like we've done many tmes in the past

http://www.trackforum.com/images/WARMING/Vostok+Temp-Co2-Mh4-Dust-Solar-Glacial.jpg

From every cold glacial minimum the Earth heats up, ice melts, and eventually reaches a warm peak - largely predicated on solar forcings.

That is exactly where we are at right now - approaching the interglacial warm maximum. As this image shows:

http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/image76.png

... past sea levels WERE appx 7 meters, or appx 21 feet lower than today. So it is not alarming, no matter how some scientists and media try to spin it - that the ice is gonna melt, seal levels are going to rise further, and temps are going to warm.

And it will do that regardless of human activity.
