There is no snow to tramp through in the sugarbush this year. In this sudden spring, the tradition of gathering and boiling goes on with optimism despite low yields.

Too warm for any sap flow on the northern shores of Lake Mille Lacs. We need freezing nights!!!! We ran the mice out of the sap shack last week.......and here we sit.....with no steam in sight. The next cold front will be the "run".

Brings back memories when I was a kid living in the Adirondack Mountains we used to go sapping as we called it. We would use a hand drill, wooden spouts and hang pails to collect the sap, then bring it home over a mile in wagons in gallon jugs with cork stoppers. We would then dump it in a large copper container that one of our friends mothers' had as she boiled it off in the back yard using the hard wood we had cut and split by hand from the year before. It used to take us about 30-35 gallons of sap for a couple of quarts of finished maple syrup that had been boiled then strained through a cloth. Was it worth all the hard work we did? Maybe not economically but what a great way to earn a few bucks and some valuable lessons in team work. If we each took a quart or two home our parents were happy and the lady would keep a couple for her self and then sell off what was left over to take care of any of her cost.
