The DNR is considering various possibilities as it waits for the Legislature to weigh in on the new hunting season.

I'd support a wolf hunting season if the hunters are allowed only the same weapons the wolves have. Teeth

Why, just WHY does anyone want to destroy a wolf that is presenting no threat? C'mon... all the hunters clamoring for a license don't own cattle which are threatened, so outside of just blowing away an animal that I doubt they will eat, what's the purpose? That they can hit something? Gonna make a nice little stew our of it?

Couldn't they just go out and shoot at each other with paintballs?

The only good wolf,is a dead one. Thin the herd.

The number of wolves that can be taken needs to be increased from 400 to 800 or 1000 wolves. There are too many wolves in this state!!

Indeed.I think a limit of 3000 the first year would be about right. That would be enough to lower the population, but still enough to breed.A sucess rate of 7% with 6000 tags sold will do nothing.Maybe when the population is high enough that they start prowling in the urban parts of the state, and a few Fifis and FLUFFIES get eaten off the lease of their owners, then, maybe. :-)

Leave them alone in the parks. Take them off the endangered list. If they come out of the parks manage them with lead.

I don't understand the need for a limit on the number of permits along with the quota. If the quota is set at 400, and the season will close when the quota is met, and hunters are required to monitor if the season is still open. Why put a limit on the number of permits sold? Might as well sell as many as possible, maximize the cash flow. Either way, the quota remains the same.

The wolves have been delisted. The DNR has submitted their plan, and the plan is conservative for a number of reasons, and the important reason is to avoid the inevitable litigation that would accompany a plan such as the wisconsin plan. Thw MN wolf population has been relatively stable over the past ten years. Ranchers/farmers are now allowed to do something about wolves that go after their stock. The plan that was in affect was largely agreeable to all stakeholders involved, and now we have a "season" on top of it. I've always thought that the people of MN were level headed and appreciate the wildlife we have, including wolves. Wolves do not hold back growth, as a matter of fact, they do attract people to certain parts of the state. I'm not anti-hunter, but I do not favor shooting something if one has no intentions to eat it. That said, if there is to be a hunting/trapping season, I hope it is conservative and well received. As a resident of the Ely area, I have had no inhibitions about going into wolf country (matter of fact, i have wolves around my place) hiking, skiing, camping, and this is all with a dog. My concerns are now directed more at the individual with trigger itch, or the trapper who does not mark his/her traps. I believe these concerns are more real than any fear of wolves.

Now that the wolf is delisted and there will be a hunting season during deer season, I'm wondering how many deer hunters will be out there blasting away at any wolf they see, license or no license.I'm just amazed at the number of deer hunters that think they're just supposed dislike the wolf because they think the wolf somehow decreases their chances of taking a relatively easy to hunt deer. Think about it, if wolves like deer, then wouldn't wolves be where the deer are?
