THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT ISSUE FOR TWINS FANS. HOME RUNS ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN WITH THE TWINS HITTERS, TRAINED BY THE TWINS COACHES. TWINS COACHES TEACH TO HIT "LATE" AND WITH A "SHORT SWING" WHICH HAS LESS BACK SWING AND MORE ON A DOWNWARD PLANE. EVEN WHEN THE PITCH IS INSIDE A RIGHTHANDED HITTER IS TRAINED BY VAVRA TO HIT THE INSIDE PITCH BETWEEN THE PITCHER AND 2ND BASEMAN RATHER THAN PULL THE BALL. THIS IS WHY DELMON, HARDY, MAUER, VALENCIA, REVERE, PLOUFFE AND EVEN PUCKETT AND OTHERS HAVE HOME RUN DEFICIENCES DESPITE BEING ENDOWED WITH GREAT NATURAL SKILLS. REVERE LEADS THE LEAGUE IN HITTING GROUNDERS TO THE PITCHER AND SECOND BASEMAN. EVERONE IS TAUGHT TO HIT THE OUTSIDE PITCH THE OTHER WAY NO MATTER WHERE YOU PLAY.

There's a lot to be said for a hitting coach who has a favored technique for a good reason. But a guy who forces everyone into a cookie cutter can do a lot of damage. When I was in high school in the late '70s, early '80s; I was an OK Little League hitter. Not too spring, but I could slap the ball around. My high school coach made me adopt the George Brett/Charlie Lau style. It put my body in a very weird position, and the no-stride philosophy robbed me of any power because I didn't have Popeye forearms like George Brett. Ruined me as a ballplayer, except for bunting and defense, which I could do. So making everyone punch the ball on the ground the other way is good for a lot of guys, but not everyone. David Ortiz as a Twin was the classic example.

Damn you autocomplete! I meant "strong," not "spring." I was "Not too strong." I have no idea whether I was "spring" or not as a high school ballplayer.

Vavra's approach works for players who have little or no power,it gives them a chance to hit for average get on base, and drive in some rbi's. But to try and force a natural power hitter into this approach is just plain nuts.

Hitters can hit, Pitchers can pitch. With killebrew, Oliva, Allison, Puckett, Molitor, Carew, Hrbek, etc, etc, etc, we didn't worry much about what the hitting coach was pushing. Then with guys like Kaat, Pascual, Blyleven, Morris, Perry, etc, etc, etc, we did't much care who the pitching coach was. Baloney is Baloney and Steak is Steak. Hamburger would look good this year.
