These are the early adopters, the scouts on the frontier, but there's nothing at the moment to stop more from coming--we should have paid a few million five years ago to get a barrier up at the Iowa border when we had the chance. Much cheaper than trying to stop the damage, if we even can, once they've settled in. Luckily, flooding should be minimal this spring; that's the easiest way for them to move upstream--swimming over or around dams during a flood.

How many does the DNR consider before they will call them an "established population?" They did the same with zebra mussels... until they reproduced at a rate of 1 million per female/year. By then, it was too late for Mille Lacs and Minntonka. The DNR is years too late on ZM and, with their current attitude, the same is true for carp.

What kind of commercial fishing do they do near LaCrosse? I don't ever recall seeing a commercial fishing boat around here.

Who eats fish out of the Mississippi River? Please let me know which stores/restaurants sell fish from the Mississippi so I can avoid it at all costs.
