The demand for a donation to renew Gophers season tickets is the last straw for some.

My brother calls me late and says you have to read this article about the gopher tickets...I do...and finally there are fans like us that travel miles to see them, and have had tickets since 1971 and with all this loyalty we lose the rights to our seats if we don't pay an additional $800.00 for our two seats. We feel this is absolutely crazy and am glad to know there are other fans who don't know if they'll purchase season tickets again. We have been fans thru all the good and the poor years of the gopher games and now to be rewarded with a huge additional cost for this entertainment is so disheartning...especially in todays economy. We spend alot of gas money to attend these games also. I hope many more loyal fans respond to this crazy donation to earn their seats. This really is unfair to all of us loyal fans!!! We should be in an uproar over this, I feel extremely bad for my in-laws who are in their late 80's who have 4 tickets and are on a fixed income, and have had their tickets even longer than us. Sports has been their entertainment and now with an additional $1600.00, they have to give their tickets up too. The University sports program should be ashamed of the money they are asking for from their loyal fans who have supported them all these years!!!! To those of you making this decision UNDO this before you lose alot of fans!!!!!!

Quit bellyaching!!! You can't have your cake and eat it too. How do you think the programs in the BigTen that are successful accomplish that? By generating revenue to pay for facilities and arenas that attract the athletes. It's a pretty simple equation. You might not like it, but it is the new reality. If you want to continue to have prime seats then you will need to pay a prime price. Loyalty doesn't pay the light bill.

schoolguru is right, but that doesn't mean it will work. Right now, Tubby's team is terrible, and there is some optimism for next year as the team is relatively young, but the way this guy has coached the past few years, I'm off the bandwagon, and I graduated from the U of M. We need a new coach, but it won't happen. It should though. Weber at Illinois is probably going to get fired with much the same record.

As as season ticketholder since 1978, I'm done donating to this mess. Get a new AD and hire Flip Sanuders and maybe someone will show up.

Well, you've got sportswriters and other folks that think it's o.k. for the state to give a billionaire $600,000,000 in order to see bad NFL football. Why not add a few hundred per fan to see bad college basketball?

Loyalty left the NCAA long ago. It doesn't matter if it's stories like this, or conference realignment erasing long rivalries.

The U administration wants loyal fans who give to the U. Perhaps they don't know what "loyalty" means. Pulling tickets from fans who stood by them for 30 crappy years in order to get more money out of the fans is hardly loyalty by the U admin to the fans..."You be loyal to us, alumni - What? Us be loyal to you in return? Get real. Hey - you think this is a business? It's an accounting exercise subsidized by the state"... Although, maybe it is time to change that dollar-worshiping convoluted ethical wasteland over there - when in the last 30 years has the U admin done ANYTHING but measure goals and achievement by the dollar bill? Students in the upper deck so the admin can make more money -- a thin student section at Williams so the U admin can make more money. And its spirit in those 30 has been as stimulating as a 100 page accounting statement. Penny wise and dollar foolish. Loyalty? We don't need no stinking loyalty.

The same mess is hitting the hockey fans at Mariucci next season. I have been a fan since 1971 and a 25-year season ticket holder. I told them that if I can't sit in my regular seat with my friends around me (who I met when the new arena was opened 19 yrs ago) then I WON'T have season tickets next year. It is extortion and I simply won't stand for it. I love my hockey Gophers, but I will buy single game tickets and not have to pay the $300 extra to stay in my current location. I hope the Athletic Dept gets a clue...

they should have used this idea for the vikings stadium

I feel for those that will have to pay extra for those premium seats, but most of us can't afford the straight up cost. $45 tickets for a family of 4 is $200 plus food and gas for say another $100. $300/game and say 15 games for $4,500, not many of us can afford that. Viking games are even higher and with a new stadium will be nuts, so most of us watch the games on TV. Let the wealthy pay, as they are the only ones that can afford to go now.
