I'm glad the state's doing better, but Gov. Dayton's right: Neither side can take credit for this.

This isn't exactly good news, but at least it isn't bad news. Dayton is right that it cheap and rather dishonest for Republicans to try to claim this as support for their policies. They are the ones who played games with the budget in the first place and shifted 2+ billion dollars around by short changing schools. Nothing for them to be proud of here.

Bottom Line: There is no such thing as a "surplus" if this state has debt

We need to do actual cuts. Not just small decreases in large increases of spending.

What "Cuts"? Where shall we "Cut"?

This is a repeat of a bogus story. What has become of common sense? How can it be described as a surplus, when you are in debt? It is the same as people who claim there are cuts in the budget when the increase is not what they wanted. It is past time to live within our means and tell the true story. It is also past time for the Strib to report the facts reporter glean rather than the press releases of the politicians.

No real surplus . We have future debts.

@mcleanm: Cut what? That is the tough question that most of GOP avoid like the plague...reverting to meaningless rhetoric like "cut pork belly spending" or "cut wasteful programs". The GOP needs to stop being spineless and name names...or stop spewing this meaningless message.

Let's see...$6 billion deficit left by a Republican governor and now a $1billion dollar surplus when we have a Democrat as governor.

KEEP CUTTING SERVICES, we need to realize that pushing off debts isn't sustainable.....cut past the point of hurting.....build up reserves get debt free.
