Scoggins: Sampson III finishing an underwhelming four years

  • Article by: CHIP SCOGGINS , Star Tribune

Ralph Sampson III's time with the Gophers is emblematic of Tubby Smith's tenure. It began with high hopes, but one expected so much more by now.

One of the most disappointing recruits ever. Never thought he'd stay 4 years. Unfortunately I was wrong.

Chip had some competitive fire in this article. Liked it!

Everyone was expecting he would be another Mychal Thompson or Jim Brewer, but he will not even be drafted by the NBA. You can be sure his dad is disappointed with his sons lack of development under Tubby.

BCannniff, so Sampson's lack of effort and competitiveness is all Tubby Smith's fault?

You know, i wished RSIII would have been 100% engaged all of the time, but i also wish that for just about every kid i ever see on the court. Unfortunately for the Gophers, with all of the departures and injuries, its a moot point. even if Ralph had been putting up 15/8 every night we would have won two more games and probably just missed the tourney. Oh well. thanks Ralph, for sticking around for 4 years with a poor caliber squad. You certainly had some nice moments.

Keep this article for next year at this time and just sub the name Rodney Williams. Of course, he could be playing at the "next level" next year . (ha!)

Too bad...RSIII wasted what could have been a fine Division 3 career.

He has done what only 5 other Gophers have done and you are going to complain about effort? I don't buy it. We would have seen much different results if he had played for Clem Haskins.

Nice column and one that went beyond the usual superficial junk often reported as sports news. Sampson seems to feel that he had a pretty good career here at the U of M and ranking fifth overall in those important categories would seem to support that contention. Granted, we all wanted him to do more at times and play more consistently at the level that we would see from time to time. On the other hand, he seems like a good kid with his feet on the ground who is realistic about his abilities on and off the court. I wish him well as he sounds like quite a mature young man.

The best thing about the game Saturday at Williams Arena will be that RS3 will be playing his last home game as a Gopher. I've never seen a D-1 athlete with less fire in the belly. I'd hate to guess what I would do to him if I was Tubby.
