Considering the population of the area, it amuses me that it's taken 2 decades to procure a new radar system to give the people time to take cover. Someone was sleeping and not concerned about lives.

I wonder whether the imagery/data from these new radars will be available to the public right away, or if they've got a restrictive contract like the old Nexrad units did. For several years after they were first deployed, Nexrad wasn't available on the National Weather Service's website.

This stuff isn't free. I bet it won't be available to the public for several years. Most in the public won't be able to interpret it anyway.

This will really suck if it isn't available for free even though the public paid for it. The enhanced NEXRAD radar the NWS has now that doubles the resolution of the old NEXRAD isn't free. The only option is to get it from a private company and pay them hundreds to thousands of dollars a year. That is why you don't see a lot of app/websites with that enhanced radar that aren't a large company (weather channel, intellicast, etc) or don't have a bunch of ads to try and pay for it.

Take it easy everyone... The new data is already widely available at the sites already upgraded. It comes available usually within a week of the site being upgraded and calibrated. The vast majority of the new radar products though take a decent amount of training to know how to read, so not many non-meteorologists will likely find use in them. There will be some nice new derived products though too such as precipitation type, etc.
