GM Rick Spielman mulls it over: Picking a sure-thing tackle with the No. 3 pick, or using the bargaining chip to address a multitude of needs.

Um, if you don't have a solid O-line, you won't have to worry about playmakers at all. Overthink? I don't believe we have to worry about the Vikings brilliant brain trust "overthinking" anything. Geez, draft a likely All-Pro tackle and worry about the next hole to fill. It's not rocket science!

I am certain that the purple will find a way to screw this up.

Hopefully a team doesn't get the opportunity to pick #3 very often. Why trade it? Use it and use it wisely. If Kalil is available take him. This draft will tell us a lot about Spielman and this organization as a whole. We won't have to wait long.

Trade down and get a bunch of average players. Yea that's a good idea.

To tell you the truth i think his statements are just so he doesnt tip his hat to any teams what his actual thoughts are. Everyone knows and ALL the pros say you need a SOLID left tackle to win at this level. I just think spielman is saying this to see if other teams will start to drool and throw more players/picks his way.....just my thoughts.

Kali might be all he is being said to be. However, there is a caution to be noted with Kali and with some of the other projected top tackles, like Rieff and Martin. Kali, and I believe the other two as well, only started one year, their junior year, and then popped straight into the draft. One season of tape on a 20-year-old kid doesn't necessarily predict if he will mature into a disciplined and dedicated pro (it sure didn't with McKinney).

A special caution with Reiff, the tackle from Iowa. How many really good, challenging defensive ends did he have to face his one year of playing in the Big Ten? Not very many. So what does the tape tell?

Kali may be the real deal cream of the crop tackle he is said to be. Or maybe there is another 20-year-old kid in the draft the Vikes can pick up later, a kid who isn't even done growing yet, who will mature into the kind of player who will dedicate himself to dominating his position for the next ten or twelve years. There is safety in numbers, and some good reasons to trade down in order to get extra chances at finding players who will pan out.
