How did we go this long without a BASIC skills test?

I think all elected officials should take a basic skills test, especially considering that they are making spending decisions on billions of dollars.

I'm not opposed to requiring it for teachers, can we please have the legislators take it first?

So, could Tennyson do math? Kant? Poe? The 1% demand a nation of grinds, so toss that Keats and Shelley in the recycler...

I don't think it should be too difficult passing a basic skills math test. This will be fun to watch. I think the students will love this. I hope the results are made public.

"Private-school teachers are not legally required to pass the test". Interesting.

I can't help but think this is a complete waste of time and money.

"luzhishen: So, could Tennyson do math? Kant? Poe?" ---- Are you in support of throwing-out the 4-year BA degree requirement for teachers? I ask because the BA does require math however nothing like that required of STEM teachers who must take much more advanced math (those who teach physics, chem, bio, etc). In other words, if you went to a real college and got a BA, you should be able to easily do the math required in the test. Or, lets just make teaching a certification career (no college needed) where a teacher learns ONE SPECIFIC AREA. No math necessary for music and phyed teachers, right? And no need to learn jazzercising by the chemistry and speech teachers, eh? It would save a LOT of money (for college students) and likely greatly improve teachers as the knowledge gained during their education would be deep in that topic and nothing else.

Please read the article carefully. Teachers already have to take a basic skills test. This just takes away the option of getting a 3 provisional license while working on passing the test. I don't think this will really improve teaching though. It will just mean there are fewer people available for schools that are looking to hire. Guess this makes that whole bill about firing senior teachers pointless. There will be 30% fewer new teachers to replace the teachers who are leaving. A warm body is better than no body...
