Hiawatha detours will last indefinitely as workers scramble to shore up the bike and pedestrian span and find the cause.

I am a daily bike commuter who strongly favors public investment in our biking infrastructure. That said, the Sabo bridge was a waste of money. During my daily commute, I almost always cross Hiawatha rather than using the Sabo bridge because (1) traversing the bridge requires far more energy and (2) crossing 28th Avenue (with no traffic signals) is far more perilous than crossing Hiawatha with the benefit of a walk sign. The money should have been spent elsewhere.

How about an investigation on bridge inspections in Minnesota. 1. I35 Bridge Collapse 2. Stillwater Bridge declared safe - then History channel does expose and now will close for 4 months for repairs. 3. Hiawatha Bridge closed shortly after inspection.

Why do you need a suspension bridge for bikes???? WASTE! Use concrete like every other pedestrian bridge!

URS told MNDOT the 35W bridge was going to collapse and they turned around and let construction companies tear holes into it, allow rush hour traffic on it and over loaded the bridge and they wonder why it collapsed??????????????

Here is a hint for them: suspension bridges require more maintenance and will cost more over the long term. Whoever heard of a suspension bridge for bikes?? This is the same type that is being build for the Broadway bridge in NE Mpls!

Why not just go with an ugly, brutalist design instead of spending money trying to make our city look attractive with interesting architecture? It's a waste of money to do anything more than erect drab, blocky concrete structures.
