Nickname uproar in North Dakota damaging school

The pained expression on his face betrayed Dave Hakstol's emotions last week, when the North Dakota hockey coach reluctantly raised the white flag on his support for the Fighting Sioux nickname.

The people who really love that nickname need to start taking into account that the Russian valley of Altai descendents of those who it remembers are rejecting the honor, so why give it to them? Be content that some group of Saxons, Norse, or others with links to North Dakota would be proud to have their ancestors honored. The UND Fighting Norse sounds pretty good to me. I understand the fight is for the principle, but winning an honor for someone who doesn't appreciate it is not winning.

College should have done nothing to comply with NCAA mandate. The NCAA's position was irrational, discriminatory, and is not in the best interests of the tribes, the University, or the State. They shouldn't have wasted their time and $$$ trying to appease NCAA. When NCAA first declared that the Logo and Fighting Sioux name were hostile and abusive to native Americans the NCAA should have been sued for defamation. Although there is some evidence that Indian logos can be hostile and abusive (Florida State for example), there was little evidence to support their theory against the Fighting Sioux name. Actual circumstances surrounding the University use of the name show that it is used with respect and pride. Also many SIOUX native Americans have benefited from attending UND and most are proud of the name. Would have saved time and taxpayer money if the college would have done the right thing from the start and challenged the NCAA's abusive treatment of the Fighting Sioux.

So this writer thinks UND is trying to bully the NCAA? It's the other way around. The U of M and Wisconsin should be taken to task for participating in this rank political correctness by not scheduling games with UND.

IMHO if one school has to drop a Native American name/logo all schools must drop their names/logos also. Florida State fans are the most rude behavior en it comes to football and their tomahawk chop ans chanting.

Before reading this column, i was ready to give up the fight, but now after reading it, I hope UND sues the NCAA for all they've got! Just the fact that the column admits the NCAA is not a democracy should be enough to win any case against them. The NCAA is a monopoly and the fact that they allow Florida State to remain the Seminoles for monetary reasons while picking on a small school like UND is hypocritical.

The NCAA is not a "democracy." It is a voluntary group of schools that have agreed to work together to sponsor sports, and membership in the organization means agreeing to its by-laws.

"They are so single-minded in their attachment to a sports-team nickname that they want it engraved in the state constitution, as if it were essential to a free society." ---- Likely because a lot of them had it engraved on their bodies using ink! In the eyes of other schools, they are quickly becoming the North Dakota State Whiners.

Leave the Nickname alone... Tell the NCAA where to go... Too bad if people are upset, get over it. This has been the school nickname for decades, so absurd. We'll probably have to change the Gopher nickname next because it's offending to the local greens keepers.

What a bunch of disgusting sissy's we have become in this country... What is up with all the narrow minded clowns in this country that are so cowardly when it comes to standing up for what the people want! These pathetic good doer's are destroying America! My God, do we really need to shut down America every time a few people get upset.

Excellent article summarizing what is the most prominent, and very publicly expressed, feelings of many many of those who are true UND supporters, many of whom were rabid Fighting Sioux supporters. What was carefully not mentioned though is the fact that the petitions were filed primarily for and by the Spirit Lake Tribe, who has steadfastly supported the name to the point of suing the NCAA. The latter action should be applauded. Without the Native Americans the petitions do not exist. However, as Rachel stated, many former (pre-2012...The Law to retire took effect 1/1/12) supporters of the name have now progressed to supporting the UND first and foremost. Many people do not know or mention the fact that The Law was comprised of two parts: 1) use the name, and 2) sue the NCAA. The latter did not happen, some say because the UND had already sued/settled with the NCAA but then it is not a criminal matter and perhaps the double jeopardy rule may not apply. Either way, The Law is twisted and should be declared unconstitutional, negating what is not a matter for public vote in the first place. It is a UND matter alone. Ultimately, the only people who signed the petition are name first, UND second people and/or people who want to see the UND hurt. The Fighting Sioux name must be retired with all the historical honor it so justly deserves. If it doesn't help the UND grow, the name has got to go! But it will NEVER go away until the UND comes up with a replacement for "Let's Go Sioux!"
