Both Mauer and former Twins catcher Terry Steinbach have pointed out that there are techniques catchers can use to protect themselves better in the event of a collision at home plate.

Good catchers have never had to block the plate with anything but a shin guard.

Its all part of the game....if they are not gonna let him guard the plate, no sense in even having him catch...let Butera take the blunt of it....stupid.....

Mauer block the plate? I think the Twins will be delighted if he just shows up to play. Fans will be excited if he bothers to swing the bat 3 days out of 4. And if he hits the ball out of the infield, the city of Minneapolis will rename Hennepin Avenue Little Joey Mauer Way.

First off, I think the idea of allowing a runner to plow into a catcher is as absurd as letting a catcher sit on top of the plate to keep the runner from having access. I recall Hunter knocking over a catcher in a productive play. That was the last time and it was about 10 years ago. I have seen Cuddyer try to do the same thing many times and most of the time he would have been safe if he had simply slid efficiently rather than being tagged out up high with a collision. With the rules in place though if there is one person in camp I would tell to be less aggressive it would be Morneau. He loves taking the extra base but if he is capable of making a comeback taking the risk is just plain stupid.

Joe has never shown he was willing to block the plate, so I doubt he will start now.

Mental note to the NL West teams, charge home. San Francisco has officially given you the green light.

With the Twins' collection of outfield arms, it is assuming a great deal to think that there will be any plays at the plate.

"I think the idea of allowing a runner to plow into a catcher is as absurd..." Why stop there? I think the idea of wooden bats is absurd, we should switch to aluminum.

Less vital than blocking the plate is Mauer finally assuming his role as a team leader, esp. now that guys like Cuddyer and Nathan are gone. Check this quote about Buster Posey of the Giants, and ask if you could currently see a Twins teammate saying something similar about Mauer: "Buster's the core of this team just because he's on both sides, offense and defense. He's our leader," left-hander Barry Zito said. "It's good for the morale of the team. We feel like we're a full unit again."

Based on observation, most players think a hook slide is something you ride at an amusement park rather than a baseball skill. So it's wise to prepare catchers for players to continue to mindlessly barrel into them. That's about all most of them have in the old repertoire anymore.
